Speech by Dr Koichiro Matsuura
Chairman, Judging Committee, Yidan Prize
2017.12.10

The Honorable Mrs. Carrie Lam, our distinguished guests, ladies and gentlemen,

Yidan Prize’s mission is to create a better world through education. Through recognizing educators with outstanding accomplishments in education research and development, the Prize aims to empower change makers, build a global community of education leaders and to create long-lasting positive impact on humanity.

Each year, two awards will be presented: Yidan Prize for Education Research and Yidan Prize for Education Development. The nominations we have received this year are cogent reflections of the global vision of the Yidan Prize. We received nearly 1,000 incredibly high caliber nominations for the two awards from very diverse backgrounds, and from all corners of the world.

The nominees’ research and development projects address a broad spectrum of areas of interest, benefit a total of 90 different countries and regions, with a huge geographical footprint across the developing world.

As the Chairman of the judging committee, I can say on behalf of all the judges that our process of deliberation has been a humbling experience. All of the judges were moved by the scope of outstanding contribution, the passion and the energy brought by the nominees to the field of education.

The nominees’ work was judged based on four criteria: sustainability, future-orientation, innovation and transformation. We were thoroughly impressed by the extent to which the nominated research and development projects have excelled in these aspects, but out of all these nominations, the inaugural laureates exemplify the best of the best.

Both inaugural laureates bring decades of accomplishments to the table. For years, they have been consistently creative, innovative and determined in the way they approach their work. Both of them have gifted the world with proven track records of approaches to education that works. Their sense of mission will continue to inspire countless educators to come.

On behalf of the judging committee, I express my deepest gratitude to all those who have contributed to the success of the inaugural Yidan Prize. Thank you.
