Yidan Prize Conference Series: Asia-Pacific Co-organized by the Yidan Prize Foundation and the Faculty of Education, HKU

12 December 2018, Hong Kong – The Yidan Prize Foundation and the Faculty of Education of The University of Hong Kong (HKU) co-organised the Yidan Prize Conference Series: Asia-Pacific with keynote lectures delivered by the two newly minted Yidan Prize winners on December 11, 2018 at HKU.  Professor Larry HEDGES, Chairman of Department of Statistics at Northwestern University, USA and one of the most influential applied statisticians in the world, is the Yidan Prize Laureate for Education Research 2018. Professor Anant AGARWAL, Founder and CEO of edX and a professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, USA is the Yidan Prize for Education Development Laureate 2018.

 

Dr Charles CHEN Yidan, Founder of the Yidan Prize, said that the Yidan Prize Foundation envisioned the Prize more than just a global award, but an international platform to bridge the East and the West, to incubate new ideas and to bring all stakeholders together for the cause of education.  He also appreciated Professor ZHANG Xiang and the Faculty for co-organising this inaugural event to showcase the innovative ideas of Professor Larry HEDGES and Professor Anant AGARWAL.

 

At his opening speech, Professor ZHANG Xiang, President and Vice-Chancellor of HKU, expressed gratitude to Dr Charles CHEN Yidan who founded the Yidan Prize, which has a mission to create a better world through education.  Professor Zhang said that similar events were held in Harvard University and the University of Cambridge in 2017.  It was a great honor for HKU to co-organize the first of its kind in Hong Kong and Asia with the Foundation.

 

Professor Larry HEDGES and Professor Anant AGARWAL delivered keynote lectures on “The Essential Role of Research Evidence in Education” and “Reimagining Education” respectively.  Professor HEDGES discussed the role of research evidence in education while Professor AGARWAL discussed how today’s workplace is evolving and how both employers and employees are facing the need for a major skills transformation, and how education must evolve to meet the needs of this future workplace.  The symposium ended with a closing remark delivered by Professor CHENG Kai-ming, Convenor of the Global Advisory Board at Yidan Prize Foundation and Emeritus Professor of Education at HKU.

 

The event was attended by more than 200 participants, including scholars, researchers, government officials, school principals and teachers, representatives from NGOs and university students.  On the same day, the Faculty also hosted the 3rd International Forum for Deans of Schools of Education at Research Universities at HKU.  A group of deans of education from different parts of the world including Australia, Finland, Japan, Mainland China, Russia, Singapore, South Africa, South Korea, Taiwan, UK and USA attended the Forum and some of them joined the keynote lectures as well.

About the Yidan Prize

Founded in 2016 by Dr Charles CHEN Yidan, a core founder of Tencent, the Yidan Prize has a mission of creating a better world through education. It consists of two awards, the Yidan Prize for Education Research and the Yidan Prize for Education Development. Yidan Prize Laureates each receives a gold medal and a total sum of HK$30 million, half of which is a cash prize while the other half is a project fund. To ensure transparency and sustainability, the prize is managed by Yidan Prize Foundation and governed by an independent trust with an endowment of HK$2.5 billion. Through a series of initiatives, the prize aims to establish a platform for the global community to engage in conversation around education and to play a role in education philanthropy.
