The Yidan Prize Foundation, the global philanthropic foundation behind the world’s highest education accolade, hosted the 2023 Yidan Prize Awards Ceremony today.

The ceremony was officiated by Mr John KC Lee, the Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR), and gathered government officials, Consul Generals, representatives from UN and global philanthropic foundations, as well as international education experts and educators.

The 2023 Yidan Prize laureates are dedicated to advancing the quality of teaching and learning and breaking down barriers to higher education globally. Professor Michelene Chi was awarded the 2023 Yidan Prize for Education Research for her groundbreaking theory of cognitive engagement, the ICAP framework, which gives teachers a stronger understanding of how students learn, and how to design lesson plans and activities to better engage them. Shai Reshef was awarded the 2023 Yidan Prize for Education Development for his innovative model of higher education. Shai founded University of the People—the first tuition-free, non-profit, American-accredited online university—ensuring every qualified student around the world has access to quality higher education.

Each laureate is awarded HK$30 million (approximately US$3.8 million), half of which will serve as a project fund to help them scale their education projects and support more learners globally.

Dr Charles CHEN Yidan, founder of the Yidan Prize, extended his congratulations and gratitude to Professor Michelene Chi and Shai Reshef and asked everyone to “strive for a world where the best ideas for improving education are put into place on a large scale—where young people are motivated to learn, collaborate, and apply their learning to solve real world problems and where everyone, everywhere can develop their talents to the fullest. This is the world young people deserve and the world we all need.”
