Life has never been more unpredictable. What does that mean for education today — and tomorrow?

Children today are living through accelerating changes in technology, demography, and our physical and social environments. The speed and breadth of change will shape their futures in ways that are as profound as they are unpredictable.

For education, then, there can be no such thing as business as usual. There are urgent questions to answer — and many different perspectives to consider. The Yidan Prize Foundation and Arizona State University’s Mary Lou Fulton College for Teaching and Learning Innovation have brought together panels of experts across research, policy, and practice to explore these issues.

They’ll discuss transformative ideas, practical innovations, and pressing questions including:

  • What learning needs would global changes in demography, ecology, and technology create?
  • How do we design and implement systems that support both learners and educators?
  • How can we build on learning sciences and make classrooms more inclusive and effective?
  • How do we explore and apply new technologies for the benefit of learners, educators, and their communities?

Leading for dynamic learning systems

With shifts in the way we think about school design and the building of ecosystems that support learners in a multitude of ways, we also need to think anew about leadership. This session will focus on how building and systems leaders can design organizations that empower and inspire both learners and educators.

The session will be followed by small group discussions to explore what the possibilities are for leaders in dynamic learning systems, and what leadership looks like when learning environments are learner-centered.

Adopting learner-centered practices

Our education system has been built on average, but in fact, average is a statistical abstraction. For the next generations, we need to build an education system built on variance. This panel will delve into the need to develop educational practices and build learning environments that are responsive to the personal, social, and cultural experiences of learners.

After the panel, small group discussions will discuss what the possibilities are for our education systems if they are built for variance and with a learner-centered mindset.

Speakers

  • Professor Michelene Chi, 2023 Yidan Prize for Education Research Laureate; Regents Professor & Dorothy Bray Endowed Professor of Science and Teaching, MLFC, ASU
